Complexity Theory and Moments of Change in the Psychoanalytic Setting
Postmodernism and complexity theory have only recently been drawn into contemporary psychoanalytic theory. Dr. Leffert looks critically at some recent attempts to incorporate these concepts and considers their relationship to each other. This presentation advances why therapists should be familiar with complexity and its clinical utility. Postmodernism and complexity theory can inform psychoanalysis but constrains some of its assumptions. The nature and occurrence of qualitative events of psychoanalytic change are illustrated with clinical vignettes. A published version of this presentation is available.
Course Objectives:
· Understand complexity theory and how it plays out in therapeutic situations
· Understand how complexity theory expressed itself in such diverse situations as understanding marital outcomes and the treatment of anorexia
· Develop techniques to incorporate these concepts the clinical practice
